Shaft Manufacturing Process and Quality Standards
The shaft manufacturing process begins with understanding the application, operating conditions, causes of failure of previous shafts, and project requirements, including third-party approvals and testing. Based on the results of the failure analysis, the engineering team may recommend design modifications or manufacturing additional components.
The engineering team verifies and documents the dimensions of the shaft, designs and creates drawings (if not provided by the OEM). Additional strength calculations, bending and torsional stress calculations are also considered to improve the performance of the new shaft.
Shaft manufacturing then involves CNC turning. A solid piece of material, such as steel, is attached to a chuck and cut with specialized tools through a subtractive process. Subtractive processes such as cutting and grinding shape the shaft to the proper size and tolerance. Machining processes such as boring and drilling create grooves where the gears connect to the shaft. Specialty shafts may use different machining processes and require specific materials. Metallurgical analysis can be used to ensure that the selected material is suitable for the application.
The materials used need to have high tensile and endurance strength to withstand static and dynamic loads. If the gears are mounted on shafts, the gears are usually made of very durable materials such as carbon steel. These can be further hardened by heat treatment. Depending on the application, some shafts may require additional protective coatings such as fiberglass/epoxy polymers.
Quality manufactured shafts can extend the life and reliability of many critical components used in a variety of industries such as marine, hydroelectric, wind energy, pulp and paper, oil and gas, and manufacturing.
Our shaft manufacturing facility is fully equipped with a 76-inch center CNC lathe, a 76-inch center swing x 465-inch conventional lathe, a 100-inch vertical vertical boring mill, and a 50-inch x 110-inch table capacity horizontal boring mill.
Best of all, Kingrail Parts has a team of experienced engineers and technicians ready to take on any challenging project. Kingrail Parts’ shaft manufacturing process is always centered around an engineering-centric approach that emphasizes quality control through comprehensive initial and final dimensional inspections.
More About Shaft Manufacturing
Mechanically speaking, a shaft is a rotating component that transmits rotational power from one component to another. Shafts are almost always cylindrical and often have gears or cogs that connect to another component to transmit energy to the absorbing component.
Shafts play an intrinsic role in machinery across many industries: energy, marine, aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, mining, manufacturing, agriculture, and paper.
Engineers can connect shafts and gears of different sizes to create more torque, mechanical energy, and power within equipment.
Shaft manufacturing involves innovative technologies and processes to make shafts more efficient to produce and meet tighter tolerances.
